How MLB Parlays Work

Covers parlay mechanics, leg types — money line, run line, NRFI, strikeout props — and how payout odds compound from 2 legs to 4.

An MLB parlay is one bet that chains two or more game outcomes together — every leg must win or the whole ticket loses. That's the core mechanic. Everything else is details, and the details are worth knowing before you put money down.

What exactly is a parlay leg?

Each selection inside a parlay is called a leg. Pick the Tigers on the money line, the Mariners on the run line, and the over on a third game — that's three legs. Win all three and you collect. Lose any one of them and you lose the entire wager. No partial credit.

If you're new to the concept, the full breakdown lives on the What Is an MLB Parlay Pick? page.

Which bet types can you use as MLB parlay legs?

The most common options:

  • Money line — straight-up winner, no spread. A heavy favorite might sit at -180; an underdog at +155.
  • Run line — MLB's version of a point spread, almost always set at ±1.5 runs. The favorite has to win by two or more. Full explanation at What Does the Run Line Mean in Baseball Betting?
  • Totals (over/under) — betting the combined run total of a game.
  • NRFI / YRFI — No Run First Inning or Yes Run First Inning, popular short-odds legs that resolve fast. See the NRFI and YRFI Parlay Legs Explained guide for how to use them.
  • Strikeout props — over/under on how many Ks a starter throws. Good texture for a strikeout prop parlay.
  • Futures — World Series winner, division winner. Can be a leg at some books.

How do the odds compound as you add legs?

Every leg you add multiplies the payout — and multiplies the sportsbook's edge. A three-leg money line parlay on moderate favorites has paid out around +600 (6-to-1). String together three bigger underdogs and the same structure can reach +1100 (nearly 12-to-1). Four legs can push past +1600 (16-to-1).

Those numbers get exciting fast. But each additional leg also means one more way to lose the whole ticket. The math is unforgiving. Get the full numbers at How Much Does an MLB Parlay Pay? 3-Team vs 4-Team Math.

What's the difference between a parlay and a single-game bet?

A single-game bet — say, Tigers ML at +120 — wins or loses on its own. A parlay ties that result to every other leg. Higher ceiling, higher variance. That's the trade-off. For strategy on managing that variance, the MLB Parlay Betting Strategy section goes deeper.
